Progressive Parents in Pointe South

March 6, 2016

On Wednesday March 2nd, we participated in "Muffins for Moms"; an event held at Pointe South Elementary School to increase parental involvement with their child's education and to foster more open relationships between parents and school staff. I was extremely happy to be apart of the progression going on in Pointe South, particularly at Pointe South Elementary School. A school where I spent many summers as a kid participating in their summer programs. Being able to indulge with my community on educating parents and supporting teachers in  the growth and development of the youth makes me humbled to even have this opportunity to serve our community.

The school provided muffins for the moms, along with access to child rearing services, health insurance advice, financial advisement, and voter registration. As the mothers enjoyed the refreshments, the principal Dr. Taylor addressed the audience of moms on how not to spoil their kids but don’t stop loving on them. She also recognized mothers for their hard work and sacrifices, and expressed the need for their continued involvement with the school. Moms also shared their best practices of positive family engagement with each other.

After the kumbaya ended, I led a few parents around the school to visit the classrooms to observe the learning process; some even assisted. This was no ordinary day. It was Read Across America Day! Read Across America Day is a nationwide celebration of reading which happens to be Dr. Seuss's birthday. Some teachers were dressed as their favorite character from a book and guest READERS read to various classes.

In all, it was a beautiful day.

P.S. I will work on having more pictures next time, there were moms actually there lol.
